Take It One Step at a Time

Your Stolen-Vehicle Action Plan.

01

Get Somewhere Safe

Do not follow a suspect or attempt to retrieve a tracked vehicle yourself. If it is safe and there is no emergency, check whether an authorised driver moved the vehicle or it was removed by parking enforcement.

02

Report It to the Police

Give the registration, make, model, colour and where and when it was last seen. Tell police about any tracking system and keep the crime reference number.

03

Contact the Tracking Provider

If you have a monitored tracker, follow its theft-reporting process promptly. Keep location information for police and the provider; do not publish it or travel to confront anyone. An app-only tracker may have a different process.

04

Tell Your Insurer

Contact your insurer straight away with the crime reference and relevant details. Follow its instructions for your claim. Keep a note of who you spoke to and when.

05

Keep Your Evidence Together

Retain available camera footage, tracking alerts, vehicle photographs and purchase or installation records. Keep the original files and avoid editing them. Your Road Guard portal holds the documents available for your job.

06

Follow the Official Next Steps

Police notify DVLA about the theft. If an insurer pays out, GOV.UK explains the further DVLA steps, including the process for a personalised registration. Follow that official guidance and your insurer’s instructions.

Official Guidance

Go Straight to the Source.

Should I Go to the Location Shown in My Tracker App?

No. Pass the information to police and your tracking provider. A location can be approximate or out of date; attempting your own recovery can put you at risk.

Can Road Guard Guarantee Recovery?

No. A tracker can provide useful information, but reception, service arrangements and circumstances vary. Contact the police and the relevant monitoring provider first.
